Banyards Celebrates Multiple Wins at the CSA Annual Awards 2024

Banyards had much to celebrate at this year’s Commissioning Specialist Association (CSA) Annual Awards. Not only did we sponsor the prestigious “Commissioning Manager of the Year” award, but we also took home two coveted awards of our own, marking a milestone in both our project achievements and our commitment to diversity.

The CSA Awards, held last week, highlighted the best talent and innovation in the commissioning industry, and we were honoured to play an integral role in the event. The “Commissioning Manager of the Year” award recognises individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, technical expertise, and a dedication to excellence in complex projects. This year’s winner, Matt Phillips from Crown House Technologies, impressed the judges with his innovative solutions and ability to manage large-scale projects with excellence.

Nick Till, Managing Director of Banyards, had the privilege of presenting the award. Reflecting on the occasion, Nick remarked, “I am immensely proud to be part of an industry with such exceptional talent. Every finalist showcased remarkable skills, but Matt Phillips truly embodies the qualities that make a Commissioning Manager so important on all projects”.

Alongside Matt Phillips, we also want to congratulate the other talented finalists:

  • Anthony Newton, End Systems
  • Jim Key, HDR
  • Kyri Michael, L&P Group
  • Martin Squire, L&P Group
  • Luke Tucker, L&P Group
  • Declan Riley, Taylor & Stapleton

In addition to sponsoring this category, Banyards is thrilled to announce two significant wins of our own at this year’s awards.

Project of the Year: Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD)
We are proud to have won the Project of the Year award for our work on the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) at the University of Manchester, the largest construction project ever undertaken by a UK university. This £350m development brought together 8,000 staff and students across five state-of-the-art buildings, we were involved in every phase, from design to completion. Our independent commissioning management ensured the smooth integration of complex mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems, including advanced facilities like high-voltage labs and jet engine ventilation systems.

One of the standout elements of this project was its sustainable design. We led the implementation of energy-efficient solutions, and our innovative water-saving pre-treatment cleaning process helped to reduce water consumption and shorten the project timeline.

Dave Cocksedge (Director) commented: “Winning this award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team, and we are honoured to have contributed to such a ground-breaking engineering campus.”

Diversity in Commissioning Award
We are also incredibly proud to have been recognised for our commitment to diversity, winning the Diversity in Commissioning Award. This award reflects our ongoing efforts to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) across our business. At Banyards, we prioritise creating an inclusive workplace where every employee feels valued and respected. Our EDI policies, which align with the Equality Act 2010, protect all staff members, whether they are full-time, part-time, or temporary.

Key to our success is our internal platform, “Make Banyards Better,” which encourages employees to share ideas and feedback to continuously improve our workplace. We have also embraced hybrid working, offering staff the flexibility to balance their work and personal commitments. Our leadership team promotes EDI values at every level, and this is reflected in our Investors in People (IiP) survey, where 100% of our employees agreed that Banyards is a great place to work.

Dave Cocksedge (Director) said: “We are incredibly pleased to be the first recipients of the Commissioning Specialists Association’s inaugural ‘’Diversity in Commissioning’’ Award. It was an honour to collect this and a significant milestone, we’re proud that our efforts to promote inclusion, diversity, and equality have been recognised.

At Banyards, our internal platform, ‘Make Banyards Better,’ along with our commitment to flexible working and continuous development, has allowed us to build a workplace that supports and empowers all our staff. This award reinforces our belief that everyone feels valued and respected, and diversity and inclusion are key to the success of our business and the industry as a whole.

Jackie Taylor (Business Operations Manager) said: “We are incredibly proud of this award and our commitment to making Banyards a truly inclusive and forward-thinking business
