Volunteering at the Eastbourne Tennis Tournament – A Memorable Experience
With a deep passion for tennis and an enthusiasm for the sport, our Jackie Taylor looked forward to the opportunity to contribute to the tournament. Inspired by her daughter’s recent volunteering for the Duke of Edinburgh Award, she decided to step up and apply, even though she had never volunteered before.
After completing the application process, Jackie attended an engaging interview that focused on meeting fellow prospective volunteers, participating in team-building activities, and sharing motivations for volunteering.
The excitement grew when she was accepted and asked to commit to at least four days of volunteering. Thanks to Banyards benefits package, which includes two days of paid volunteering leave per year, Jackie managed to commit to five days.
During the first two days, which featured the qualifying rounds, Jackie worked at various entry gates, including the main gate, scanning over 2,900 tickets and ensuring a smooth and welcoming experience for spectators. The role tested her customer service skills, especially when faced with occasional challenges.
For the remainder of the tournament, Jackie was stationed at Centre Court and Court No. 1, where her responsibilities included directing spectators, handling inquiries, and even dealing with medical emergencies. One of the perks was the chance to watch numerous matches, including those featuring renowned players such as Emma Raducanu, Harriet Dart, Billy Harris, Jasmine Paolini, Daria Kasatkina, and Taylor Fritz. Jackie also witnessed the men’s doubles final, won by Neal Skupski and Michael Venus, and the singles finals, with Daria Kasatkina and Taylor Fritz emerging victorious.
A highlight of the experience was meeting Maddison Keys and Judy Murray.
Jackie commented: “The entire volunteering experience was incredible. I was surrounded by a diverse group of people, each bringing their own unique skill sets. I met nurses, a psychotherapist, and a Director of Health and Wellbeing for a civil engineering company. To my surprise, I also ran into an old work colleague from over 20 years ago. We had worked together at Gatwick Airport for Virgin Atlantic when I was in university. It was a wonderfully nostalgic moment!
I highly recommend volunteering and taking advantage of our volunteering days. It offered me a new perspective by working in an unfamiliar environment. Having been office-based for many years, it was a refreshing change to be on my feet all day. Over the five days, I accumulated 52,824 steps, according to my watch!
The experience gave me a tremendous sense of achievement and satisfaction from being part of a fantastic tournament, with the added benefit of watching a lot of tennis.”
